In this study, we show that sgs-1 is an essential gene and that sgs-1 is involved in behaviors such as locomotion and pharyngeal pumping. To identify new residues in sgs-1 that are important for normal response to G␣s, we performed a genetic screen for suppressors of the activated G␣s-induced neuronal degeneration. In total, we identiﬁed 14 residues in sgs-1 that can be mutated to suppress the neuronal degeneration. Ten of these residues are located in the catalytic domains of sgs-1, but four mutations in the transmembrane domains were also found.
